The Bluegill Fly
The Bluegill Fly
Six (6), size ten, Bluegill Flies tied with a black and yellow grizzly marabou tail, synthetic Peacock herl body, 2mm yellow foam and black/yellow round rubber legs.
The open back on this pattern creates a unique disturbance on the water’s surface that is irresistible to big bluegills.. The original fly that I was gifted many years ago had a solid black marabou tail and a natural peacock herl body. The fly is a proven fish getter but the natural peacock body would get shredded after a few fish. Over the years I made some improvements including adding a wire rib to protect the fragile peacock herl. These days I tie the pattern with Semperfli’s synthetic peacock herl which makes the fly “bomb proof”. This version also swaps out the traditional solid black tail with a black and yellow grizzly marabou.
Tied on an Allen S402BL (barbless) long shank hook.
