Take your fly fishing to the next level by learning to tie your own flies in a relaxed, hands-on setting. These in-person fly tying lessons are designed for anglers of all skill levels — whether you’ve never used a vise or want to refine your techniques and expand your fly box.
Each session provides step-by-step instruction on tools, materials, and tying techniques, with a focus on practical patterns that consistently catch fish. Lessons move at your pace, ensuring you gain confidence and leave with flies you tied yourself — and the knowledge to keep tying at home.
Lessons can be customized to your interests, including panfish, bass, trout, or seasonal patterns, and can focus on beginner fundamentals or advanced skills such as foam flies, hair bugs, streamers, dry flies, etc.
Lessons include:

Classes are generally an hour in length unless otherwise specified. All required materials will be provided and included in the class price.

Bart Lombardo is a passionate fly angler and educator known for making fly tying easy to learn and fun for anglers of all experience levels. As an instructor, he combines clear, step-by-step instruction with real-world fishing insight, helping students understand not only how to tie effective flies but also when and why they work. His lessons are relaxed, hands-on, and tailored to each tier’s goals, whether someone is picking up a bobbin for the first time or refining advanced techniques. Students leave his classes with practical skills, confidence at the vise, and flies ready to fish—along with a deeper appreciation for the craft and creativity of fly tying.
Bart has been teaching fly tying for decades and is widely recognized for sharing his expertise with anglers throughout the region. He regularly appears as a featured tier at major events, including The Fly Fishing Show, The International Fly Tying Symposium, and the Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival, along with numerous other shows across the Mid-Atlantic.
Bart previously served as the lead fly-tying instructor at Orvis in Princeton, NJ, and continues to teach classes at South Branch Outfitters and for several Trout Unlimited chapters. An accomplished commercial fly tier, he ties patterns for warmwater, coldwater, and saltwater species and brings extensive hands-on teaching experience to every class.
