Fly Tying Friday - Make Your Own Weedless Hooks

The Folded Loop Weed Guard is effective, does not interfere with hook ups and will work on many different types of flies.

The Folded Loop Weed Guard is effective, does not interfere with hook ups and will work on many different types of flies.

I tie many of my warm water flies, particularly bass patterns, on weedless hooks. Many warm-water species often live and/or feed in areas of dense cover that will eat your flies for breakfast. Fishing weedless flies will help keep them on the end of your line where they belong!

The new clamp from Hareline Dubbin comes in a set of two for easy material manipulation.

The new clamp from Hareline Dubbin comes in a set of two for easy material manipulation.

The new material clamp from Hareline Dubbin popped up on my radar a few weeks back. I was instantly intrigued by the design of these new clamps. I am a big fan of dubbing loops and use them in my fly tying a lot. In the early days, I struggled to make homemade clamps out of repurposed stationary clips.

Fly Tying Friday - Create Perfect Poppers For Panfish!

With the right tactics and flies panfish can be caught just after ice out!

With the right tactics and flies panfish can be caught just after ice out!

A common question I am often asked this time of year is how to reliably catch bluegills before the water warms up and the fish begin their spawning rituals. Many fly fishers chuckle about the notion of panfish being hard to catch on a fly. These anglers likely only fish for bluegills and other sunfish during the ideal conditions that present themselves during late spring and summer. Trying to catch panfish on the fly just after ice can be a bit of a challenge.

The Full Dress Roman Candle

The Full Dress Roman Candle

This week’s fly pattern was submitted by Robb Nicewonger. It is a fantastic streamer that can be modified to target a number of different warm-water species. The photographs in this post will certainly back that up! Robb tells the story better in his own words, so he will take it from here…
