Fly Tying Friday - Ferb's Fancy

Ferb’s Fancy

This week’s submission comes from Robb Nicewonger, it is a streamer pattern called Ferb’s Fancy (I love that name!). Robb did not include a lot of details about the pattern but the photos he included clearly indicates that the fly works!

It is common knowledge that crappies love streamers. Ferb’s Fancy is a natural choice for these fish.

Obviously the toothy critters fancy the fly as well1

Even the ditch pickles can’t refuse them!

A respectable perch that fell victim to Ferb’s Fancy’s charms!

Note the non-slip loop knot. Do you want to add more action to your streamers? A non-slip loop knot will do the trick!

Pattern Recipe:

Hook: Sabre #7380 Size 4 (4xl, std wire)
Thread: fluorescent fire orange
Tail:  FTD ET Glow Fibers, Orange
Body: Ice Yarns, Safari eyelash yarn, pink/white or orange/white
Collar: Stalcup’s starburst dubbing, light shrimp orange
Bead:  Plastic craft store, translucent pink

Tying Instructions:

Step 1: Debarb hook and add plastic bead.
Step 2: Tie in tail material.  Start right behind the bead and wrap back to the bend.  (Tail will be trimmed to length after body is completed).
Step 3:  Tie in yarn. Do this right behind the bead and wrap back to the bend.
Step 4:  “Palmer” the yarn forward, being sure to pull all of the fibers rearward as you go.
Step5:  Tie off behind the bead and secure with several tight wraps.  Superglue the wraps and whip finish.
Step6: Add a sparse dubbed collar, and whip finish.
